Getting started

How do I record a journal entry?

Open the Cairn app on your Apple Watch and tap the record button. Speak naturally for up to 30 seconds, then tap stop. Your iPhone will transcribe and analyse the entry automatically when nearby.

Do I need my iPhone nearby?

Your Watch saves recordings locally when your iPhone is out of range. Entries sync and are transcribed as soon as the devices reconnect. On-device AI analysis runs on your iPhone.

What languages are supported?

Cairn supports English, Czech, German, and French. The app follows your iPhone's language setting automatically, or you can override it in Settings → Language.

Subscriptions & billing

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

All billing is handled by Apple. To manage or cancel, go to iPhone Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions → Cairn Journal. You can cancel at any time; access continues until the end of the current billing period.

What happens after my free trial ends?

After the 7-day trial expires without subscribing, Cairn limits you to 3 journal entries per week on the free tier. Your existing entries remain fully accessible.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are processed by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund for an App Store purchase.

Privacy & data

Where is my data stored?

Journal entries are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. If you have iCloud enabled, entries sync via end-to-end encrypted CloudKit — we have no access to your iCloud data. Voice recordings are never stored: audio is transcribed on-device immediately and only the text is saved.

How do I delete all my data?

Go to Cairn Settings → Data → Delete All Entries to remove all journal content from your device and iCloud. Deleting the app also removes all local data.

Does Cairn use my health data for advertising?

No. HealthKit data is processed entirely on-device, never transmitted to our servers, never used for advertising, and never sold. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Troubleshooting

Entries are not appearing on my iPhone

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices
  • Open the Cairn app on iPhone — sync triggers on foreground
  • Check that both devices are signed into the same Apple ID
  • Restart both devices if sync remains stuck

Transcription is slow or not working

  • Transcription requires the iPhone app to be installed and the devices connected
  • Ensure Cairn has microphone and speech recognition permissions in iPhone Settings → Privacy
  • On-device transcription works offline; no internet required

AI analysis shows “Analysis pending”

AI analysis runs after transcription completes. If it stays pending, open the iPhone app to trigger processing. Analysis requires iOS 18.1+ with Apple Intelligence enabled, or an active Pro / Core subscription for cloud AI.
